Anderson, J. N., Graff, J. C., Krukowski, R. A., Schwartzberg, L., Vidal, G. A., Waters, T. M., … & Graetz, I. (2021). “Nobody will tell you. you’ve got to ask!”: an examination of patient-provider communication needs and preferences among black and white women with early-stage breast Cancer. Health communication, 36(11), 1331–1342.
Patient provider communication is critical and affects the quality and effectiveness of treatment. The study looks at the difference and similarities in communication need between black and white women cancer survivors. The patients expressed their patient provider needs such personalized information from the care provider to facilitate treatment, response to queries from patients by care providers and emotional support during the treatment process (Anderson, et al, 2021). From the study, it is clear that white and black women have different relationships with their care providers. White women received more care and support from the care providers than black women. Black women were more likely to express disappointment with their care providers while white women were more likely to praise and be satisfied with their care providers. Black women need more support and care from their providers as they seem to be more neglected than their white counterparts by care providers. Communication with care providers can be improved by technology and advocates who can argue for their rights.
